Experience the Excellence of the Devon Horse Show in PA

Alyssa & Ben competed at Devon

Let’s be real: horse shows are serious work. When you show, you spend a lot of time (and, let’s be real, a fair amount of money) making sure both you and your horse are ready. It’s more than just fitness and skill, it’s also your tack, your grooming and presentation, and your overall mindset. So, when it’s time to actually do the thing, you may as well go for it! As an equestrian photographer and someone who used to show myself, I know the amount of work that goes into showing, especially at the higher levels. So I’d like to dedicate this post to all of my amazing clients who show at the Devon Horse Show in Pennsylvania. Here’s some background on Devon!

About the Devon Horse Show

23 Dorset Road, Devon, Pennsylvania 19333

The Devon Horse Show is one of the oldest shows around. This tradition got its start back in the 1890s amidst the wave of immigration happening with westward expansion. As more people arrived in Main Line, they started to use horses to travel around town. Eventually, someone suggested having a horse show in 1896, and the town was on board! The original show looked nothing like how it looks today. In the beginning, it lasted one day and had 30 classes. It became so popular that more and more people came out, and by 1914, it was the largest show in the country!

Today, the show is internationally recognized and attracts some of the biggest names. Calvin Coolidge and Dwight Eisenhower have both sat in the stands, while Jordan Coyle, Teddi Mellencamp, Scott Stewart, and McLain Ward have all shown here. It remains the biggest outdoor multi-breed horse show in all of America. And, of course, my amazing clients have had the honor of showing here!

Services

First, of course, you have to qualify to show at Devon. The horse show starts around the end of May. Two different rings are used throughout the show. The Dixon Oval is the primary arena and offers a 150’  X 325’ space.

For more specialized classes, the Wheeler Ring is used where they offer pony breeding classes, Regular Pony Hunters, Local Hunters, and the USEF Medal. This ring is 148’ X 295’. All the arenas have gorgeous DJL Equestrian Services footing. There are systematic rotations in each section, and the starting orders will be established over the fences. Purses are mailed within 10 days of completing the show. While you are here, you can expect some big crowds. The show lasts 10-12 days and brings in a total of 100,000 people. It’s also live-streamed internationally!

Specialty

In addition to the primary Devon Horse Show, the grounds have a fall classic each year. This show welcomes professional, junior, and amateur riders to come and show for 3 days each September.
